McKinsey reportedly cuts 200 tech jobs, shifting to AI

McKinsey has cut about 200 tech jobs globally as it increases the use of AI to automate roles, according to people familiar with the matter.

The consulting firm, which employs around 40,000 staff worldwide, is also reviewing other functions for potential reductions over the next two years as AI adoption grows.

Global managing partner Bob Sternfels said McKinsey intends to continue hiring for client-facing positions, while scrutinizing headcount in non-client roles and possibly having fewer staff in these areas.

The move comes as consulting firms face tighter budgets and policy changes, with rivals like Accenture also shifting staff to AI-related work.

Implications, context, and why it matters.

McKinsey trims about 200 tech jobs; non-client roles face review as AI use grows

  •  About 200 roles equal 0.5% of a roughly 40,000-person staff, which signals targeted reductions in non-client functions as the firm leans on AI to automate tasks 1.
  •  The move reads as a shift from AI tests to workforce planning that banks on automation strengths 2.
  •  Citigroup pegs 54% of banking roles as having high automation potential by 2028, which gives wider context for workforce plans tied to AI 1.

Software makers pitching AI automation for research, compliance, and document review see a $32 billion opening

  •  US legal and Certified Public Accountant (CPA) fields represent $32 billion in yearly efficiency gains from AI 2. About 72% of professionals already use it at work 3. Vendors should go first to the 49% of companies with AI built into core strategy 4.
  •  Companies with intentional AI strategies are 3.5 times more likely to see the most important AI benefits 2. Treat them as the primary segment. Target companies with AI roadmaps (documented plans for adopting and scaling AI) first. Nearly one-third of law firms lack a coherent adoption plan 2. They will need more education and longer sales cycles.
