Maybank Indonesia funds $20m EV plant with VinFast

Maybank Indonesia has signed a US$20 million financing deal with VinFast to support the development of an electric vehicle (EV) plant in Indonesia.

This collaboration aligns with Indonesia’s goal to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2060.

In 2024, Maybank Indonesia disbursed 2 trillion rupiah (US$121.5 million) in sustainable financing, much of it directed toward clean transportation and energy projects.

Maybank also partners with Maybank Finance and WOM Finance to provide EV financing in the retail market, which grew 86% year-over-year.

Looking ahead, the bank plans to expand its green financing portfolio, focusing on renewable energy, energy transition, and clean mobility.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Banks are becoming critical enablers in Indonesia’s challenging EV transition

Maybank’s $20 million financing for VinFast represents part of a broader financial sector shift toward supporting Indonesia’s green transportation goals despite significant adoption challenges.

Indonesia’s EV adoption remains notably low, with only 17,000 electric vehicles sold in 2023, highlighting the substantial gap between government ambitions and market reality 1.

This financing pattern extends beyond Maybank, as Indonesia recently established a Sustainable Finance Committee (SFC) specifically designed to mobilize private capital for green investments, including the EV sector 2.

Financial institutions are responding to Indonesia’s Climate Budget Tagging Report, which reveals that only 16.4% of required funding for climate initiatives has been secured, creating an opening for banks to fill this substantial financing gap 2.

Bank Indonesia has already introduced specific green financing incentives, including favorable Loan to Value (LTV) provisions and macroprudential policies to promote sustainable investments in sectors like electric transportation 3.

2️⃣ Infrastructure and consumer adoption remain critical bottlenecks despite financing progress

While Maybank’s financing supports manufacturing capacity, Indonesia faces a significant infrastructure deficit with only 440 public charging stations currently available against an ambitious target of 32,000 stations by 2030 1.

Consumer hesitancy is evident in recent market data showing an 11.3% decrease in overall vehicle sales, partly because potential buyers are delaying purchases while waiting for EV prices to drop through government incentives 4.
