Mastercard expands payment options with stablecoins

Mastercard is expanding its payment options to include stablecoins, allowing consumers to use these digital assets for transactions.

The company announced this move in a statement on April 28, 2025.

Users will be able to earn rewards and make payments with stablecoins stored in their crypto wallets through Mastercard cards.

With over 150 million merchants globally, users can also withdraw stablecoins to their bank accounts via the Mastercard Move feature.

To facilitate stablecoin transactions, Mastercard is collaborating with issuers like Circle and Paxos, as well as the cryptocurrency exchange OKX to introduce a payment card.

This expansion comes as Congress debates stablecoin legislation, which could speed up adoption.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Stablecoins are transforming payment economics with massive cost advantages

Mastercard’s stablecoin integration represents a strategic response to fundamental cost advantages that are reshaping payment economics.

Traditional payment networks typically charge merchants 2-3% per transaction, while stablecoin transfers can reduce these costs by up to 80%, significantly improving margins for businesses1.

This cost differential explains why stablecoin transaction volume has already reached $5.1 trillion in just the first half of 20242, with the market growing from just $5 billion in 2020 to approximately $230 billion today3.

For perspective, the global payments industry processed 3.4 trillion transactions worth $1.8 quadrillion in 20232, showing the massive market Mastercard is positioning to protect and transform.

The integration of stablecoins with Mastercard’s vast merchant network (150+ million locations) creates a bridge between crypto rails and traditional commerce infrastructure.

2️⃣ Traditional financial giants are racing to integrate stablecoins before disruption
