Mastercard drops Zerohash investment after Bvnk deal
Mastercard dropped plans to invest in Zerohash, a Chicago-based crypto infrastructure firm, after agreeing in March to buy UK stablecoin infrastructure company Bvnk for US$1.8 billion.
CoinDesk reported in January that Mastercard was considering a strategic investment in Zerohash, which was then seeking to raise US$250 million at a US$1.5 billion valuation, and the company is now pursuing a new round at a higher valuation.
Zerohash, founded in 2017, provides APIs and developer tools for crypto, stablecoin, and tokenization products, while recent deals by Kraken parent Payward and Bullish suggest consolidation is continuing across digital asset infrastructure.

Implications, context, and why it matters.
BVNK gives Mastercard more stablecoin payment tools for round-the-clock business use
- Mastercard agreed to buy BVNK for US$1.8 billion. Another US$300 million depends on certain commitments 1.
- BVNK serves payment firms including Worldpay, a global payments processor, plus Deel, a payroll and contractor payments platform. They use its stablecoin tools for payments, cross-border disbursements, and treasury flows 2.
- Mastercard plans to use BVNK’s technology for 24/7 stablecoin settlement by payment processors plus merchant acquirers, which sign up businesses to take card payments. It also plans to add stablecoin checkout to Mastercard’s payment gateway 3.
- The deal extends Mastercard Move, its payment network infrastructure offering. It adds stablecoin capability inside a broader system instead of a standalone crypto product 1.
The deal raises the stakes with Visa and puts pressure on correspondent banking
- Correspondent banking uses chains of intermediary banks for cross-border payments. That setup can be slow, opaque, and expensive 4.
- The purchase heats up competition with Visa plus other payment networks. Both are trying to become “networks of networks” that connect traditional government-issued money with crypto 4.
- Their paths differ. Mastercard is focusing on infrastructure with business-to-business (B2B) cross-border payments, while Visa has put more weight on consumer plus merchant uses such as spending stablecoin balances through Visa cards 4.
- For payments fintechs, the deal backs the stablecoin model. It also brings in a powerful rival, so smaller firms may need sharper niches or partnerships 4.
