Mastercard debuts AI agent payments in Singapore

Mastercard said it completed its first live authenticated agentic transaction in Singapore with DBS Bank and United Overseas Bank (UOB).

A CardInfoLink AI agent booked a Hoppa ride to Changi Airport by connecting to Hoppa’s taxi and limousine network, and the payment was processed using Mastercard Agent Pay, Mastercard said.

Mastercard said the transaction used tokenized credentials authenticated with Mastercard Payment Passkeys to verify consumers and protect data.

The company said it is establishing a regional AI Centre of Excellence in Singapore to support innovation and governance in agentic commerce across Asia Pacific.

Mastercard said earlier authenticated agentic transactions were completed in Australia, New Zealand, and India.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Mastercard’s transaction signals a rivalry with Visa to define AI payments

  • The move lands in a head-to-head race with Visa, which launched an agentic commerce pilot with DBS Bank in mid-February 2026 1.
  • Visa backs Visa Intelligent Commerce, while Mastercard advances Agent Pay, as both push for shared rules for AI-led purchases 2.
  • Merchants need a reliable way to tell approved AI shopping agents from scam bots, since current defenses may block both 1.
  • With DBS Bank and United Overseas Bank (UOB) in Singapore involved, Mastercard is testing how Agent Pay works with bank fraud engines, consent flows, plus auditability models 3.

The shift from human clicks to AI agents creates new technical demands for businesses

  • Agentic payments shift AI from a shopping helper to software that can pick items and pay on its own 3.
  • Online sellers face false alarms when bot filters stop legitimate agent-driven checkouts 1.
  • Network tokenization powers these flows by swapping card numbers for tokenized credentials.
  • Visa and Mastercard both rely on tokenization, so building that setup now helps merchants support either network’s approach as standards emerge 2.
