Man gets 5 years’ jail for stealing, laundering 120k bitcoin
Ilya Lichtenstein has received a five-year prison sentence for his role in laundering money linked to the 2016 Bitfinex hack, involving the theft of approximately 120,000 bitcoin from the cryptocurrency exchange.
Court documents indicate that the 35-year-old infiltrated Bitfinex’s network to authorize fraudulent transactions. These transactions transferred bitcoin to wallets under his control.
Authorities revealed that Lichtenstein employed various complex tactics, including creating fake identities to open online accounts and using programs to automate conversions.
In addition to the prison term, Lichtenstein will face three years of supervised release.
