Malaysia’s Johor data center capacity set to reach 5,800 MW
Johor, Malaysia, now has a total planned data center capacity of 5,800 megawatts, according to DC Byte, as global demand for AI-driven computing rises.
The state, located near Singapore, has attracted billions in investments from major tech firms, including Google, Microsoft, and ByteDance, due to its cheaper land, proximity to Singapore, and government incentives.
While data centers have brought jobs and economic growth, officials are slowing project approvals amid concerns over energy and water use.
Johor’s current data center capacity is about 580 MW, and according to Kenanga Investment Bank Berhad, all data centers in Malaysia could use up to 20% of the country’s total power capacity by 2035.
To meet demand, Malaysia expects to add 6 to 8 gigawatts of gas-fired power, and is also approving more renewable energy projects.
