🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
ecommerce helps Tune Talk step away from price battles
- The Malaysian mobile market runs on price competition, as operators chase Gen-Z and foreign workers who watch spending closely 1.
- Tune Talk wants out of the “GB for RM” race, where providers mostly compete on how much data each ringgit buys. It is building a digital ecosystem around value, starting with its in-app shop 2.
- That shift rests on a back-end overhaul with Mavenir, a telecom software company. Tune Talk says the project aims to lift operating efficiency by 60% to 70% 3.
- Lower operating costs may free up money for services beyond mobile plans, though Tune Talk has not linked those savings directly to the in-app shop 3.
The ‘Telco to Techo’ plan pairs leaner operations with new products
- Tune Talk offers a model for operators in crowded markets. Reworking core systems first can make later moves into in-app shopping and other lifestyle services easier 3.
- Those back-end changes support Tune Talk’s move from a connectivity provider to a “Techo.” The company uses that term for an everyday digital platform that combines mobile services with commerce in its app ecosystem 2.
- Tune Talk also hired a new CMO from consumer tech companies such as Foodpanda, the food delivery platform. The move came as Tune Talk worked to shift from a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO). An MVNO sells mobile services using another company’s network. Tune Talk also aims to become a mobile network operator (MNO). An MNO runs its own network infrastructure 4.
- A busier app could help Tune Talk keep customers close. It could also deepen direct relationships during that MVNO-to-MNO shift 4.
