Malaysian fintech firm Ryt Bank adds pay later to card payments

Ryt Bank, which offers the Ryt Card and Ryt PayLater in Malaysia, said on April 23 that it has added its buy now, pay later service to the Ryt Card for QR, online, and in-store payments.

The update extends Ryt PayLater from DuitNow QR to card payments on Visa’s network, which reaches more than 150 million merchants globally.

Ryt Bank said this lets users choose to pay immediately or later across local QR payments and card transactions, and it described itself as among the first in Malaysia to link the option with a debit card.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Ryt Bank’s card strategy is a calculated play in a regulated market

  • Ryt PayLater offers up to 1,499 ringgit (US$380) which sits just under the 1,500 ringgit (US$380) level where Bank Negara Malaysia’s personal financing policy requires tighter affordability checks for buy now, pay later products from regulated financial service providers 1.
  • That setup may make access easier for underserved and unserved customers. Spending leans toward groceries, petrol, and bills instead of nonessential purchases 2.
  • The feature may also keep customers more active in the app. Users of its AI assistant return at nearly twice the rate 23.

The line between debit and credit is blurring for everyday spending

  • Adding a pay-now-or-pay-later choice to the Ryt Card softens the old split between using deposits and taking on credit 2. It also makes a bank account a closer rival to standalone BNPL firms like Grab and to credit card issuers.
  • Everyday purchases may open a new income source. BNPL services can charge merchant fees of about 3% to 4.5%, often above standard card processing 4.
  • A routine grocery payment can turn into a credit transaction that earns more for Ryt Bank. That shifts the business math of retail banking.
