Malaysia weighs legal action against Meta over fake royals
Malaysia is studying legal action against Meta under the Online Safety Act after authorities flagged more than 15,000 fake social media accounts using the names of 26 royal family members between January and May.
Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said most of the accounts were on Facebook while others were on Instagram and TikTok.
He also said he had reprimanded Meta over the issue.
He said officials sought the removal of more than 230,000 posts across platforms and over 90% involved online gambling or scams.
The law allows fines of up to 1 million ringgit (US$255,000) and daily penalties of 100,000 ringgit (US$26,000) for continued noncompliance.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Malaysia’s possible action against Meta fits a broader Southeast Asian push to police online platforms
- Malaysia’s move fits a broader pattern in parts of Southeast Asia, where governments are tightening rules for digital platforms.
- Across the region, officials have set country-specific requirements to curb scams, online gambling, and other illegal content.
- That pressure leaves tech companies dealing with a patchwork of rules, rather than one global moderation policy.
The dispute adds to a global move that may split compliance across markets
- These steps fit the rise of digital sovereignty, with countries setting their own rules for online platforms.
- For businesses, that brings practical strain. An ad allowed in one market may break content laws in another, raising compliance costs plus penalty risk.
- Companies that depend on global platforms for reach may need separate plans for each country.
- Over time, this may feed a splinternet, where online services and user experience differ by jurisdiction and weaken the idea of one open global market.
