Malaysia probes alleged Nvidia chip work for China AI
Malaysia’s trade ministry is investigating claims that Chinese engineers bypassed US chip restrictions by using Malaysian data centers with Nvidia’s high-end AI chips.
The Wall Street Journal reported that four engineers allegedly moved 80 terabytes of data to Malaysia in March.
The data was processed using 300 servers powered by Nvidia chips to develop an AI model, which was later sent back to China.
The ministry said the actions might not break local laws but emphasized Malaysia’s opposition to efforts that circumvent export controls.
Companies have been reminded to follow other nations’ restrictions to avoid secondary sanctions.
The allegations come as Trade Minister Tengku Zafrul Aziz is in Washington to negotiate lower US tariffs.

The Malaysia case highlights how traditional export control frameworks, designed for physical goods crossing borders, struggle to address access to computing power as a service.
Unlike physical chips that can be inspected at customs checkpoints, computational resources in data centers can be accessed remotely or through temporary in-person arrangements, creating regulatory gray areas.
