🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Malaysia bucks regional trend with consumer-driven IPO surge
Malaysia’s impressive IPO growth contrasts sharply with broader regional patterns, highlighting a significant divergence in market dynamics.
While the overall Southeast Asian market experienced a 21% decline in the number of IPOs, Malaysia achieved a 48% year-on-year increase to 32 listings in the first half of 2025 1.
This counter-cyclical performance is particularly notable considering Southeast Asia’s IPO market reached its lowest activity in nearly a decade during 2024, according to analysts 2.
Consumer-focused companies emerged as the primary growth driver, accounting for 43% of total proceeds, with Eco-Shop Marketing Bhd’s $230 million IPO standing out as the region’s largest listing 3.
The consumer sector’s dominance suggests investors are prioritizing established brands with proven domestic market positions during uncertain economic times, a trend that Wong Kar Choon from Deloitte predicts will continue through 2025 4.
2️⃣ Quality over quantity reshapes Southeast Asia’s IPO landscape
Despite fewer listings across Southeast Asia, the region witnessed an increase in capital raised and market capitalization, revealing a fundamental shift toward higher-value offerings.
The total IPO market capitalization across Southeast Asia increased by 33% to reach $7.7 billion in H1 2025, even as the total number of IPOs declined from 67 to 53 compared to the same period in 2024 1.
