Malaysia launches startup ASEAN platform for region

Malaysia has launched the Startup ASEAN platform, a digital gateway to connect and support startups across the ASEAN region.

Led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and implemented by Cradle Fund Sdn Bhd, the initiative is part of Malaysia’s 2025 ASEAN Chairmanship agenda.

The platform acts as a one-stop hub, offering access to regional markets, funding, talent development, and ecosystem insights.

The platform is a key component of the ASEAN Startup Technology Ignite 2025 program.

Cradle, appointed to lead the initiative, has rolled out regional programs to boost connectivity and collaboration.

The roadmap includes a pre-launch in 2024, full launch in 2025, and the ASEAN Centre of Excellence for early-stage startups starting in 2026.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ ASEAN’s startup ecosystem faces critical funding gaps despite massive growth potential

The Startup ASEAN platform addresses a significant regional challenge: inconsistent investment across startup growth stages.

Early 2024 data showed market stabilization in tech investments but revealed persistent structural funding gaps, particularly in seed funding and specialist AI capital 1.

This funding disparity is pronounced with Series A investments being three times larger than seed-stage investments, potentially driving high-quality founders to leave the region 1.

Malaysia’s platform launch comes at a strategic time when Southeast Asia’s startup ecosystem is projected to reach USD 295 billion by 2025, despite private funding hitting a six-year low in 2023 2.

By connecting startups to regional investors through a unified platform, Malaysia’s initiative directly addresses the fragmentation that has historically limited capital access across ASEAN’s diverse economies.

2️⃣ Regional integration builds on decades of ASEAN economic collaboration

The Startup ASEAN platform represents the evolution of long-standing regional integration efforts that began with ASEAN’s founding in 1967 3.
