Malaysia plans to ban social media use for those under 16 starting in 2026.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil said the government is reviewing age restriction measures from countries like Australia to protect young people from online risks, including cyberbullying, scams, and child sexual abuse.

Fadzil said the government hopes social media platforms will comply with the age ban next year.

Concerns about the impact of social media on children’s mental health have led to lawsuits against companies such as TikTok, Snapchat, Google, and Meta in the US.

Malaysia has recently increased regulation over social media, requiring major platforms to obtain licenses under new rules.
