Lyft acquires European taxi platform Free Now for $199m

Lyft, a US-based ride-hailing company, has acquired the European taxi platform Free Now for €175 million (US$199 million).

This acquisition marks Lyft’s entry into the European market and is expected to close in the second half of 2025.

Free Now, based in Hamburg, Germany, operates in over 150 cities across nine countries, including the UK, Ireland, Germany, and France.

This acquisition allows Lyft to compete in Europe’s ride-hailing market against established companies like Uber, Bolt, and Gett.

Lyft and Free Now aim to serve over 50 million users annually.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ European ride-hailing market presents challenging regulatory landscape

Lyft’s European expansion follows a much different timeline than its main rival Uber, which entered the UK market 13 years ago in 2012 1.

This delayed entry means Lyft must navigate a complex regulatory environment that has already caused significant challenges for competitors, as evidenced by London transport regulators’ two attempts to ban Uber over safety concerns 1.

European ride-hailing regulations vary significantly by country and even by city, with many markets having developed specific rules in response to earlier market entrants like Uber and Bolt.

Lyft’s acquisition approach, buying an established local player with regulatory relationships across nine countries, suggests a strategy to minimize the regulatory friction that characterized Uber’s earlier European expansion.

Free Now’s existing operations in over 150 cities across major markets like the UK, Ireland, Germany, and France provide Lyft with immediate regulatory compliance in these jurisdictions 1.

2️⃣ Multimodal transportation becomes essential to mobility platform strategy

Free Now’s service offerings extend beyond traditional ride-hailing to include e-scooters, e-mopeds, and e-bikes, representing a more comprehensive mobility platform than Lyft’s current U.S. operations 1.

This multimodal approach has contributed to Free Now generating over €1 billion in gross bookings in 2024 and achieving EBITDA-positive status, demonstrating the financial viability of diverse mobility offerings 1.
