Lyft acquires European ride-hailing firm Freenow
Lyft has completed its acquisition of Freenow, expanding its global footprint to 11 countries and nearly 1,000 cities.
Freenow is a European mobility platform operating in over 180 cities.
Currently, the Freenow and Lyft apps prompt users to download the partner app when traveling between North America and Europe, with full cross-network roaming planned for the future.
Eligible riders can receive up to 50% off their first ride on the partner’s network through the end of 2025.
Freenow’s CEO and leadership team will report to Jeremy Bird, EVP of driver experience at Lyft, while country general managers will continue leading local operations in nine European countries.
Both companies plan to introduce new features for riders and drivers in the coming months.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ European taxi dominance shapes Lyft’s international expansion strategy
Lyft’s FREENOW acquisition reveals how mobility markets differ dramatically across regions, requiring platform-specific approaches rather than copy-paste strategies.
FREENOW generates 90% of its gross bookings from traditional taxi services across 150 European cities, contrasting sharply with Lyft’s rideshare-focused model in North America 1.
This taxi-heavy business model reflects Europe’s regulatory environment and consumer preferences, where established taxi infrastructure remains dominant despite the growth of app-based booking platforms.
The €175 million acquisition price suggests Lyft values FREENOW’s local regulatory relationships and driver partnerships over attempting to recreate its North American rideshare model in Europe 1.
The cross-platform usage data shows early evidence of market appetite. Lyft’s app was opened 4.6 million times in FREENOW’s European markets while FREENOW’s app was opened 1.2 million times in Lyft’s territories since early 2024 2.
2️⃣ Acquisition strategy demonstrates focus on addressable market expansion over revenue multiples
Lyft’s acquisition pattern shows a consistent strategy of buying market access and operational scale rather than pursuing high-revenue targets.
