LuLu’s investment arm backs Qatari fintech firm PayLater

LuLu Alternative Investments (LuLu AI), the investment division of LuLu Financial Holdings, has made a strategic investment in the Qatari fintech firm PayLater.

PayLater is among the first licensed providers of Buy Now, Pay Later (BNPL) solutions in Qatar.

This investment represents LuLu AI’s first entry into Qatar’s financial market.

PayLater recently received the first BNPL license from the Qatar Central Bank, marking a significant development in the country’s fintech landscape.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Qatar represents fertile ground for BNPL amid low e-commerce adoption

PayLater’s emergence addresses a unique market gap in Qatar where digital readiness hasn’t translated to e-commerce adoption.

Despite Qatar’s impressive 85% internet penetration rate, only 14-15% of residents were shopping online as recently as 2019, creating an opportunity for alternative payment solutions12.

The low credit card penetration rate (only 14% of Qatar’s population) has historically limited online purchasing options, with cash-on-delivery dominating 80% of transactions in the MENA region1.

Trust issues and financial access barriers have created pent-up demand, as evidenced by survey data showing 44% of Qataris express willingness to shop online despite low actual usage2.

PayLater’s status as the first Qatar Central Bank-licensed BNPL provider positions it to bridge this gap by offering a regulated alternative that addresses both trust and access challenges.

2️⃣ MENA’s fintech investment surge signals maturing ecosystem

LuLu AI’s investment in PayLater aligns with broader regional trends showing extraordinary growth in fintech funding.

Fintech investments in the MENA region skyrocketed by 650% between 2020 and 2023, demonstrating investor confidence despite global economic headwinds3.

Payment solutions continue to dominate the sector, accounting for 44% of all fintech funding in the first half of 2024, highlighting the strategic importance of companies like PayLater3.
