London’s Cinven nears $1.2b deal for French AI firm Artefact

A London-based private equity firm Cinven is negotiating to acquire Artefact, a French company that specializes in data and AI consulting.

The deal, which requires regulatory approvals, was announced on July 28. While financial details were not disclosed, the deal could value Artefact at approximately €1 billion (US$1.2 billion), according to people familiar with the matter.

Based in Paris, Artefact provides data services to more than 1,000 clients globally, including BNP Paribas, Carrefour, and Unilever.

The company operates in 25 countries and was taken private in 2021 by a consortium led by Ardian.

Ardian started the sale process earlier this year, with JPMorgan Chase & Co. advising on the transaction, according to Bloomberg News.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Private equity firms are aggressively targeting data and AI consulting companies

The Artefact acquisition reflects a broader private equity trend of investing heavily in specialized consulting firms, particularly those focused on data analytics and AI services.

Recent deals demonstrate this pattern: Renovus Capital acquired data analytics consultancy KSM Consulting after the firm achieved 500% growth over five years1, while Guidehouse completed a $1.1 billion acquisition of consulting firm Navigant in 20192.

These acquisitions align with private equity’s recognition that consulting firms with technical expertise can deliver predictable revenue streams through long-term client relationships.

The appeal is particularly strong for firms serving enterprise clients, as Artefact does with its 1,000+ global clients including major corporations like BNP Paribas and Unilever.

Private equity firms are drawn to the recurring revenue model and high margins that established consulting relationships typically generate, especially when combined with growing demand for specialized technical services.

2️⃣ Rapid AI consulting market expansion justifies premium valuations

Artefact’s €1 billion valuation reflects the explosive growth trajectory of the AI consulting sector, which multiple industry analyses project will grow at 20-26% annually through the decade34.

The global AI consulting market is projected to expand from approximately $8.75 billion in 2024 to around $58.19 billion by 2034, driven by enterprise digital transformation initiatives and increasing data complexity3.
