Livspace cuts 1,000 jobs in shift to AI-led operations

Bengaluru-based home decor startup Livspace has laid off 1,000 employees, representing about 12% of its workforce, as part of a strategic shift toward AI-driven operations.

The company is reorganizing to focus on automation in departments such as sales, operations, design, and marketing.

Livspace said that the layoffs are part of a resource reallocation rather than cost-cutting. Co-founder Saurabh Jain also left the company after 11 years.

Livspace has previously cut its workforce amid efforts to improve profitability. The company reported a 23% rise in revenue to 1,460 crore rupee (US$160,92 million) in FY25.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The AI pivot story puts focus on pre-IPO pressure and conflicting accounts

  • The company said job cuts hit about 12% of staff, while people aware of the matter put the figure near 1,000 roles, or about 25% of roughly 4,000 employees 1.
  • The changes follow reports of a possible down-round, a fundraising round at a lower valuation than before, that would cut valuation from $1.2 billion to $700 million, though the company denied being in those talks 2.
  • The reductions also fit common pre-IPO (initial public offering) cleanup, where firms tighten teams and spending.
  • Livspace plans to list in 18–24 months and move its base to India from Singapore in mid-2025 as part of an India listing plan 3.
  • Livspace said its adjusted EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization) loss shrank by nearly 50% in FY25, which supports a stronger listing case 4.

AI-powered job cuts are becoming a common pre-IPO move

  • Livspace described the reductions as an AI pivot, not simple cost cutting, as debate grows over “AI washing” job cuts, which uses AI language to make reductions sound innovation-led 5.
  • That framing can ease investor concerns by tying fewer roles to product work, not a cash crunch.
  • As a KKR-backed unicorn (a private company valued at $1 billion or more), Livspace adds a template for late-stage Indian startups that want a tech path to profitability before a public listing 3.
  • Examples of automation include AI-driven 3D rendering in design and lead-scoring in sales, which signals wider change in creative and service work 6.
  • Roles may shift toward running AI tools and planning work, while routine tasks move to software.
