Lightspeed leads $50m series B round in US AI health startup

Assort Health has raised about US$50 million in a series B round at a US$750 million valuation, led by Lightspeed Venture Partners.

The round comes just four months after its US$22 million series A.

Founded in 2023 by Jon Wang and Jeff Liu, the startup uses AI voice agents to automate patient communication tasks for specialty healthcare offices.

The company started by serving orthopedic and physical care offices and has since expanded to Ob-Gyn, dermatology, and dentistry.

Assort Health reportedly has annual recurring revenue of a little over US$3 million.

Other startups in the sector have also raised capital recently, including EliseAI with a US$250 million series E and Hello Patient with a US$20 million series A, as investors increasingly target AI tools for patient communications.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Administrative AI gains traction faster than diagnostic applications in healthcare

Assort Health’s focus on automating patient phone calls aligns with broader adoption patterns showing healthcare providers are more comfortable implementing AI for administrative tasks than clinical decision-making.

As of 2024, 66% of U.S. physicians have used AI tools, but primarily for administrative functions, while only 12% rely on AI for diagnostic assistance1.

This preference for administrative AI makes business sense because it addresses immediate operational pain points without requiring the complex regulatory oversight needed for diagnostic tools.

Phone automation specifically targets one of healthcare’s most resource-intensive administrative burdens, patient communication, which often requires significant front desk staffing for routine scheduling and FAQ handling.

The rapid funding rounds in this space, including EliseAI’s $250 million Series E at a $2.2 billion valuation and Hello Patient’s $20 million Series A, demonstrate investor confidence in administrative AI solutions that can deliver measurable operational improvements without the regulatory complexity of clinical AI applications.

2️⃣ Specialty practices represent an underserved market for healthcare efficiency solutions

Assort Health’s expansion from orthopedic and physical therapy offices to dermatology, Ob-Gyn, and dentistry reflects the particular communication challenges faced by specialty practices.
