US to lift curbs on Anthropic AI model, source says
The US Commerce Department is expected to lift export controls on Anthropic’s Fable 5 AI model on June 30, according to a source familiar with the matter.
The move would partly roll back restrictions imposed on June 12 over national security concerns.
Anthropic, a US-based AI company, disabled Mythos 5 and Fable 5 after the June 12 order.
Analysts said the order likely relied on the Export Administration Regulations, which are administered by the Commerce Department’s Bureau of Industry and Security.
They described it as the first use of export controls to restrict access to an AI model.
According to Anthropic, officials said the action followed reports of a technique that could bypass Fable 5’s safeguards and access the cybersecurity capabilities tied to Mythos 5.
Anthropic described Fable 5 as its most capable widely released model for demanding reasoning and long-horizon agentic work.
Mythos 5 has the same underlying specifications but is available only in limited release.
Before the expected Fable 5 decision, the Commerce Department had allowed Anthropic to restore Mythos 5 access to more than 100 US organizations, including large corporations and government agencies.
Anthropic said the approved group included cyber defenders and infrastructure providers, while the broader June 12 restrictions remained in effect.
