Lidar maker Luminar to cut 25% staff, warns of cash crunch

Luminar plans to cut 25% of its workforce and warned it could run out of cash by early 2026, according to a regulatory filing on October 31.

The lidar sensor maker began 2025 with about 580 employees but did not specify how many were affected by earlier layoffs.

CFO Thomas Fennimore will step down on November 13, with the company saying there were no disagreements over finances or auditing.

Founder Austin Russell, who was replaced as CEO in May after an ethics inquiry, is attempting to buy the company.

Luminar cited lower-than-expected sales to Volvo and selling sensors below production cost as key challenges.

It reported US$72 million in cash and securities as of October 24, expects Q3 revenue of about US$18 million, and holds US$429 million in debt.

The company has delayed interest payments on some loans, with lenders extending the deadline until November 6.
