Lidar maker Luminar files for bankruptcy
Luminar Technologies has filed for voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy in the US to pursue a sale of its LiDAR business and the equity of its semiconductor subsidiary.
The Orlando-based company develops LiDAR hardware and software for the automotive and industrial sectors.
Luminar said it has agreed to sell its Luminar Semiconductors Inc. unit to Quantum Computing Inc. for US$110 million in cash, pending higher offers and court approval.
The company received support from most of its first- and second-lien noteholders to use US$25 million of its existing cash during the process.
Luminar said it will continue to supply LiDAR products and services to customers during the proceedings.
The company is seeking court authorization to complete the sale of its assets by January 2026.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Luminar’s bankruptcy exposes the brutal economics of automotive Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) at scale
- Luminar filed for bankruptcy with liabilities between $500 million and $1 billion against assets of $100-$500 million 1, even after entering production with Volvo’s EX90 in 2024 and shipped “multiple times more product in the second half of 2024 than it has in the prior 10 years” 2.
- By 2022, its accumulated deficit hit $1.3 billion 1. Securing production deals with original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) like Volvo, plus an initial factory capacity of around 250,000 sensors a year expandable to 500,000 3, still could not cover the cash needs of building LiDAR and key components in-house.
- Volvo will remove Luminar’s sensors from 2026 models 1, so a start of production (SOP) launch does not lock in revenue when LiDAR has no mandate.
Rivals can move on Luminar’s OEM programs
- Innoviz, Aeva and Cepton can pitch OEMs that picked Luminar for programs with near-term SOP because those timelines now face supplier risk 1.
- System integrators that serve automotive Tier-1 suppliers should call on programs with design wins (official supplier selections) for Luminar. OEMs will need a qualified backup fast to avoid production slips, which gives competitors leverage on terms.
- Luminar agreed to sell the equity of Luminar Semiconductors Inc. to Quantum Computing Inc. for $110 million in cash, subject to higher or better offers and court approval 4. The deal would split the in-house photonics arm, which makes light-based chip components, from the LiDAR unit.
