LG Uplus launches AI tool to fight voice phishing scams

South Korea’s LG Uplus will launch an AI-driven anti-phishing feature in its ixi-O AI agent starting June 30.

The tool detects AI-generated voices during phone calls to combat rising voice phishing and deepfake scams.

It can identify manipulated voices within five seconds and alerts users to potential fraud, such as impersonation or fake hostage situations.

The system was trained on 3,000 hours of call data, or about 2 million calls. It uses voice activity detection, speech-to-text, and anti-spoofing analysis.

The feature runs on-device without storing data externally, reducing privacy risks.

LG Uplus will also analyze calling patterns from flagged numbers and collaborate with the National Forensic Service to compare voices with a phishing criminal database.

LG Uplus’s approach of using on-device AI rather than server-based processing represents an important evolution in telecommunications security architecture.

By processing voice analysis locally on the device without storing user information on telecom servers, LG Uplus is addressing growing privacy concerns while still providing advanced protection—a balancing act that’s becoming increasingly important as the AI cybersecurity market is projected to grow from $24.82 billion in 2024 to $146.5 billion by 2034 1.
