LG unit launches LLM-reasoning hybrid AI model
LG AI Research, the AI arm of LG Group, has launched Exaone 4.0, South Korea’s first hybrid AI model. The announcement occurred on July 15, 2025.
The model consists of two versions: a 32 billion parameter expert model and a 1.2 billion parameter on-device variant.
The expert model has shown its capabilities by passing written exams for six national professional licenses, including those for physicians and appraisers.
The on-device version is designed for consumer electronics. It provides faster processing and improved privacy without depending on external servers.
Benchmark tests indicated that Exaone 4.0 outperformed open-weight models from the United States, China, and France in areas such as coding, mathematics, and scientific reasoning.
LG has also released the model as an open-weight option on Hugging Face. This enables developers to customize and apply it in various projects.
Hybrid AI systems are still relatively rare worldwide, with similar models introduced by companies like Anthropic and Alibaba.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Hybrid AI represents the next evolutionary phase in artificial intelligence development
LG’s Exaone 4.0 emerges from a decades-long progression in AI that began with the formal establishment of the field at the 1956 Dartmouth workshop, where pioneers like John McCarthy first proposed that machines could simulate intelligence 1.
Early AI research primarily focused on symbolic information processing and rule-based systems, which struggled with the nuance and flexibility needed for human-like reasoning 2.
The industry has now shifted toward hybrid architectures that combine the fluency of large language models with more structured reasoning capabilities, as evidenced by models like Anthropic’s Claude, Alibaba’s Qwen, and now LG’s Exaone 4.0 3.
This transition reflects the industry’s recognition that effective AI requires both natural language understanding and logical problem-solving abilities—a combination that more closely mimics human cognition.
2️⃣ South Korea strengthens its position in the global AI power balance
LG’s development of Exaone 4.0 represents South Korea’s strategic entry into a field previously dominated by American and Chinese companies, with only a handful of organizations globally having demonstrated similar hybrid AI capabilities 3.
