LG shares jump 24% on Google-based car tech

LG Electronics shares rose as much as 23.95% to 279,500 won (US$190) on May 29 after the South Korean company unveiled automotive solutions built with Google technology and based on Google’s Android Automotive operating system.

LG said the system uses a single chip to control multiple in-car displays with different aspect ratios at the same time, instead of using conventional in-vehicle display systems.

The company said this design could lower deployment costs for automakers.

The move comes as Android Automotive gains adoption among automakers including General Motors, BMW, Ford, Honda, Nissan, and Volvo.

Unlike Android Auto, which mirrors a smartphone, Android Automotive runs apps directly in the vehicle.
