LG to invest $6.2b in S Korea AI, manufacturing
LG said it will invest 9.4 trillion won (US$6.15 billion) in South Korea’s Yeongnam region by 2030 to strengthen AI infrastructure and advanced manufacturing.
Announced on July 3, the plan covers AI data centers, optical technology, AI semiconductor core substrates, and next-generation displays, with affiliate investments centered on Changwon and Gumi.
Yeongnam includes Busan, Daegu, Ulsan, North Gyeongsang, and South Gyeongsang.
Parts of the region are already industrial bases.
Ulsan and North Gyeongsang recorded 193 trillion won (US$125 billion) and 139 trillion won (US$90.4 billion) in manufacturing shipments in 2019.
The announcement also aligns with South Korea’s regional industry policy, which designates Yeongnam as a hub for materials, components, and equipment, while offering expedited permits and support for power and water infrastructure.
The Yeongnam investment also follows LG Corp.’s announcement in March 2024 of a 100 trillion won (US$65 billion) domestic investment plan.
