LG Innotek teams with US firm for physical AI sensors

LG Innotek partnered with US autonomous driving software firm Applied Intuition to advance sensors for “physical AI” products.

The companies plan to combine Applied Intuition’s self-driving software and simulation tools with LG Innotek’s camera, radar, and LiDAR sensors designed for physical AI products.

LG Innotek’s parts will be used in Applied Intuition’s autonomous vehicles under development, and test feedback will be used to refine the components.

Applied whose clients include 18 of the world’s top 20 carmakers, said the hardware and software setup could later be used in robotics and drones.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The real product is a pre-integrated autonomous driving system

  • LG Innotek ties this partnership to a shift from parts maker to integrated supplier, mixing its sensors with software to earn more from each deal 1.
  • Automakers get a faster route to a packaged setup that combines LG Innotek cameras, LiDAR, and radar with Applied Intuition self-driving software plus simulation tools 2.
  • The deal also brings digital versions of LG Innotek sensors into Applied Intuition simulation, which speeds up virtual testing before hardware installation 1.
  • LG Innotek says it is the first to place a full sensor set, with cameras, LiDAR, and radar, inside Applied Intuition simulation tools, which can cut the work of stitching together sensors and autonomy software from several vendors 1.

A new blueprint for the software-defined vehicle supply chain

  • This approach tracks the shift toward the software-defined vehicle, where hardware suppliers need tight links with software platforms to stay in the mix 3.
  • LG Innotek plans to pair its hardware with Applied Intuition software used in autonomous vehicles under development, which broadens revenue beyond standalone sensing modules 1.
  • For automakers already using Applied Intuition, whose customers include 18 of the world’s top 20 carmakers, the partnership can make it easier to assess LG Innotek sensors inside existing development and simulation workflows 2.
  • Both companies have also mentioned possible next steps outside cars, including robotics and drones 4.
