LG Innotek Q4 profit jumps 27% on camera demand

LG Innotek, a unit of LG Group that produces electronic components, reported a 27.1% rise in Q4 net profit to 135.9 billion won (US$94.3 million), driven by higher sales of camera modules and semiconductor substrates for mobile devices.

The company’s operating profit rose 31% to 324.8 billion won (US$224 million), while sales increased 14.8% to 7.6 trillion won (US$5.4 billion) during the quarter.

Sales in the optical solution division grew 15.2% to 6.65 trillion won (US$4.58 billion).

The substrate and material division’s sales jumped 27.6% to 489.2 billion won (US$338.38 million).

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The durability of the fourth-quarter profit surge requires closer inspection

  • Exposure to LG Innotek’s largest customer should be quantified to weigh how much the fourth-quarter strength relied on a single buyer.
  • A 27.1% jump in quarterly net profit was posted, while Apple was put at about 80% of LG Innotek’s revenue in one report 1.
  • The causes of the 5.8% drop in full-year operating income should be spelled out to separate one-off items, such as performance-based bonuses tied to the late-year sales surge 2, from ongoing margin pressure.
  • Future demand for value-added camera modules and semiconductor substrates for mobile devices, which was credited with lifting fourth-quarter net profit, should be checked to see if the sales pace can hold 2.

Semiconductor substrate expansion creates an opening for equipment and facility suppliers

  • Factory automation vendors, inspection tool makers, and cleanroom facilities (controlled environments used for semiconductor manufacturing) providers can gain new orders if semiconductor substrate capacity rises.
  • LG Innotek’s CFO said the company will focus on expanding semiconductor substrate output capacity to meet growing demand 3.
  • In the substrate and material division, sales grew 27.6% year on year, and utilization is expected to run close to the ceiling, which has triggered a review of expansion paths 3.
  • Suppliers can prepare for advanced packaging line bids by tracking likely timing and possible plant sites.
