LG Innotek, Intel team up on AI inspection system

LG Innotek has announced a collaboration with Intel to integrate AI-powered vision inspection solutions into its manufacturing processes. The partnership aims to reduce defect rates and improve manufacturing accuracy.

The new inspection system uses Intel’s integrated graphics processing unit (iGPU) to automate tasks that were previously done manually.

The AI solution was first introduced in 2024 on LG Innotek’s mobile camera module production line. It is expected to enhance inspection accuracy to nearly 100% and shorten AI learning time by 1.5 times.

The company plans to expand the system to other facilities, including its site in Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, later this year.

Intel’s solution is expected to improve production quality and cost efficiency for LG Innotek and its clients.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ AI vision inspection marks major shift in manufacturing economics

LG Innotek’s partnership with Intel reflects a broader economic transformation happening across manufacturing sectors globally.

The AI in manufacturing market is projected to grow from $9.8 billion in 2023 to $84.5 billion by 2031, representing a compound annual growth rate of 32.6% 1.

This dramatic growth is driven by tangible financial benefits, with 63% of companies reporting revenue increases from AI implementation and 44% achieving measurable cost reductions, particularly in manufacturing and supply chain management 2.

Visual inspection specifically has emerged as a high-impact application area, as demonstrated by a cement company case study showing an 8% improvement in feed-rate after implementing AI optimizers for production processes 3.

For manufacturers like LG Innotek, the near-100% inspection accuracy they’re targeting represents not just quality improvements but significant economic advantage through reduced waste, fewer returns, and lower warranty costs.

2️⃣ Vision inspection systems evolved from simple automation to intelligent detection

The Intel-powered solution that LG Innotek is implementing represents the culmination of decades of evolution in inspection technology.

Traditional visual inspection in manufacturing once relied exclusively on human operators, whose variable skill levels and inevitable fatigue led to inconsistent results 3.
