LG Energy Solution teams up with US firm on aerospace batteries

LG Energy Solution has partnered with US-based startup South 8 to develop lithium-ion batteries for aerospace applications.

South 8, founded in 2013, develops liquefied gas electrolyte technology for rechargeable batteries.

The collaboration focuses on creating battery cells that can operate in extreme cold, with South 8’s LiGas electrolyte enabling performance down to minus 60 degrees Celsius.

The companies will work together on research, design, and testing, with South 8 handling manufacturing.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

South 8’s liquefied gas electrolyte cells remain unproven for space despite NASA work

  • South 8 has secured over $4.7 million in government funding, with $3.152 million from ARPA-E for automotive work and $1.6 million from the U.S. Army for packs 12. Neither announcement lists a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) or any space qualification status. The design uses a liquefied gas electrolyte kept liquid under pressure to improve low-temperature behavior.
  • NASA uses TRL 7 for a prototype in a space environment, TRL 8 for flight qualified hardware, and TRL 9 for flown missions 3. With no readiness labels or independent thermal vacuum results, the schedule for space use remains unclear.
  • KULR Technology Group’s One Space tie-in with NASA signals early collaboration, far from imminent flight 4. Battery projects face years of testing at sites like NASA’s Johnson Space Center that reach 1×10^-6 torr and minus 184°C 4.

Labs can tap demand for extreme-cold battery certification

  • Experior Laboratories (an independent test lab) runs thermal vacuum chambers to -150°C with 1×10^-7 torr 5, while Dayton T. Brown (an engineering and testing company) reaches 1×10^-5 torr plus altitude simulation with thermal cycling 6.
  • Shops with AS9100C (aerospace quality management) plus methods aligned to GSFC-STD-7000, MIL-STD-1540, ECSS-E-ST-10-03C can win work for harsh environments 57.
  • Providers running outgassing checks per American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) E595 also offer EMI/EMC testing 47. These exist at NASA’s White Sands Test Facility for ASTM E595 47. Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) Environmental Test Facility handles EMI/EMC 47.
