LG Energy Solution to start local LFP battery production in 2027

LG Energy Solution will begin producing lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries for energy storage systems at its Ochang plant in Cheongju, South Korea, starting in 2027.

The company currently makes LFP batteries in the US and China, but has not produced them domestically until now.

LG Energy Solution, a major South Korean battery manufacturer, plans to start with an annual capacity of one gigawatt-hour and expand output as demand grows.

The decision comes as South Korea increases policy incentives for locally made batteries in government-backed energy storage projects.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

  • Korea Power Exchange (KPX) runs power trading 1. It will pick contractors for a 540 MWh energy storage systems (ESS) build due end-2027, which lines up with LG Energy Solution’s lithium iron phosphate (LFP) launch.
  • The 10th Basic Plan raises stable power from about 35% in 2022 to over 65% by 2036 2. Rising renewables strain the grid without storage 1, which lifts ESS demand.
  • LG Energy Solution plans 1 GWh and previously won 24% in an earlier bid. One gigawatt-hour is almost twice a 540 MWh project.
  • South Korea aims for 35% of the global ESS market by 2036 2, and ESS gear must pass Korea Certification (KC) and KCs safety reviews 2. Compliance familiarity aids domestic makers.
  • North America uses National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 855 and NFPA 70, the National Electrical Code 3. Korea requires KC and KCs for ESS 2.
  • Systems need power conversion systems (PCS) and energy management systems (EMS) 3. They also use battery management systems (BMS), transformers, and thermal control 3. North American builds often carry Underwriters Laboratories (UL) 9540 with UL 9540A tests for thermal‑runaway propagation 3. System integrators design, assemble, and certify ESS, so they can win tenders.
  • Foreign engineering firms can support Korea’s energy projects 1. The plan completes the small modular reactor (SMR) standard design by 2025 1.
  • Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) happen before installation 3. Site Acceptance Tests (SAT) follow on site 3. These steps bring steady work for testing and certification as ESS grows.
