LG Energy Solution inks $1.4b battery supply deal with Mercedes-Benz

LG Energy Solution has signed a 2.1 trillion won (US$1.4 billion) battery supply agreement with Mercedes-Benz.

The South Korean battery manufacturer will deliver batteries to Mercedes-Benz for use in North American and European markets from March 2028 to June 2035.

The deal represents about 8% of LG Energy Solution’s 2024 annual sales of 25.6 trillion won (US$17.4 billion).

The company said the contract’s volume, duration, and other terms may change by mutual agreement.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Context on the $1.4B deal versus earlier $11B reports

  •  The announced $1.4 billion is far below the $11 billion reported for other Mercedes–LG Energy Solution battery deals 1. This gap could reflect different pricing, a smaller scope, or one phase of a larger program.
  •  Key details are absent. Chemistry likely uses 46‑series cylindrical cells, large 46‑mm‑diameter units, based on LG Energy Solution’s recent focus 2. U.S. output may come from Arizona or Michigan plants 1. Undisclosed committed gigawatt‑hour (GWh) volumes block per‑kilowatt‑hour pricing and margin math. The revenue lift is 8%, and without minimum take‑or‑pay terms investors have little downside protection if Mercedes EV demand softens. Risk rises with a December 2025 report that U.S. EV purchase subsidies could end at year‑end 3.

Battery passport rules create a software opening

  •  EU rules start in 2027, so Mercedes 2028 deliveries will need digital battery passports 4. Each passport holds a battery’s carbon footprint, recycled content, and full supply chain provenance. This creates demand for platforms that link original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), battery makers, and raw‑material suppliers.
  •  Vendors with blockchain‑based product passports 4 or automated compliance validation systems 5 can serve battery manufacturers that manage multi‑tier supplier data, including sub‑suppliers. They must handle interoperability across EU Digital Battery Passports and the broader EU Digital Product Passport program for standardized product data 6. That helps automakers running multi‑region programs.
