LG Energy Solution, Honda start Ohio ESS battery output
LG Energy Solution said its joint venture with Honda Motor has begun mass production of lithium-ion battery cells for energy storage systems (ESS) at its Jeffersonville, Ohio, plant.
The facility was initially planned to produce electric vehicle (EV) batteries before being repurposed for ESS production.
The cells will be supplied through LG Energy Solution Vertech, the company’s North American ESS system integration subsidiary, for power grid, commercial, industrial, and residential applications in the US.
L-H Battery Company Inc. said it may also produce hybrid EV battery cells, depending on demand.
The venture, L-H Battery Company Inc., was established in January 2023, and the US$3.5 billion Fayette County project near Jeffersonville is expected to create 2,200 jobs.
LG said changes in the US regulatory environment for EVs and growth in the energy storage market prompted the shift.
Market research firm SNE Research projects North American ESS battery shipments will rise from 88 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in 2025 to 485 GWh by 2030 and 976 GWh by 2035.
