South Korean battery maker LG Energy Solution signed a US$1.6 billion deal to supply 6 gigawatt-hours of energy storage system batteries over two years to DTE Energy in Michigan.

The agreement covers eight grid projects in the state, including storage tied to Oracle’s data center in Saline Township.

DTE has not publicly identified all eight sites.

It said the battery energy storage systems Oracle is funding for Saline are enough on their own to meet its share of Michigan’s 2030 clean energy standard for battery storage.

The Saline development has been described as a 1.4-gigawatt, US$7 billion campus, and Oracle said full construction was scheduled to begin in Q1 2026.

LG said the cells will mainly come from its Holland plant, which began energy storage system battery production in June 2025.

Its energy storage lines are set to reach 17GWh of annual capacity by the end of 2025, while DTE plans more than 2,900 megawatts of storage by 2042.

The agreement adds to LG’s push into energy storage as electric vehicle demand stays weak and electricity use from AI data centers rises. BloombergNEF expects US data center power use to increase from 180 terawatt-hours in 2025 to 391 terawatt-hours by 2030.
