South Korea’s LG Chem said on June 18 that it signed a joint research agreement with the UK biotech LabGenius Therapeutics, which develops AI-driven antibody discovery tools.

The companies will use AI and robotic experiments to speed the discovery of anticancer antibodies and shorten the path to clinical trials.

LabGenius said its EVA platform combines active learning with automated functional screening in a closed loop.

LG Chem said identifying suitable antibody candidates can take more than five years. Across drug development, the industry average is 10 to 15 years from initial discovery to approval.

The partnership aligns with LG Chem’s life sciences strategy. The company focuses on oncology, immunology, and metabolic diseases. Under that strategy, its first proprietary anticancer candidate entered phase 1 in 2024.

LG Chem said it will provide an upfront payment and research funding. The company will later decide whether to sign a license-in agreement for antibody candidate substances. The company also said it plans to expand AI use into clinical, production, and process operations.
