Lenskart bets on AI to scale eye tests to 100 million

Gurugram-based eyewear retailer Lenskart, said in a shareholder letter that AI will be central to its FY27 plan as it expands customer acquisition and eye testing.

The company plans to use the technology across stores, factories, and customer platforms.

It wants AI to connect eye tests with product design, manufacturing, and delivery.

Lenskart also plans to raise eye tests to 100 million over the next few years from about 30 million now, said founder Peyush Bansal.

The company added 603 net new stores in FY26 and said fourth quarter revenue rose 46% to 25.2 billion rupees (US$260 million).

Its profit fell to 2 billion rupees (US$21.1 million) because of one-time adjustments.

Lenskart also said near-term revenue from its smart glasses has not been included in its outlook.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Lenskart is already using AI across its business

  • Lenskart already runs AI-powered remote eye tests in more than 500 stores. This helps ease the shortage of optometrists, or eye care specialists, across India and Asia 1.
  • Store expansion also leans on GeoIQ, Lenskart’s in-house AI tool. It estimates revenue at specific sites, which helps the company choose locations with shorter payback periods 1.
  • In its app, features like AI virtual try-on help turn browsing into purchases. Lenskart has said 45% of its sales in India are digitally influenced 1.

Lenskart is taking the same in-house model into smart glasses

  • Lenskart designs and makes its own products. That gives it tighter control over margins and the supply chain. It also follows a model used by direct-to-consumer brands, which sell straight to customers rather than through third-party retailers. In H1 FY26, it made 3.9 million frames and 2.6 million lenses at its own facilities 1.
  • The company is using that same model for consumer electronics. It is building “B by Lenskart Smart Glasses” with in-house hardware, software, and app development, using Google’s Gemini AI platform. Launch is planned by March 2026 1.
  • This mix of stores, in-house manufacturing, and owned technology may be hard for traditional eyewear retailers to copy. Many lack the same engineering or operating depth 1.
