Lei Jun says Xiaomi YU7 will be as popular as SU7
Xiaomi founder Lei Jun has expressed confidence in the company’s upcoming electric vehicle, the YU7, citing stronger user interest ahead of its official launch on June 26.
The YU7 is Xiaomi’s second EV after the SU7, which debuted earlier this year and attracted widespread attention in China. According to Lei, user sign-ups for the YU7 have already tripled compared to the SU7 at the same stage, boosting the team’s confidence in the new model’s potential.
“Based on the response so far, I expect the YU7 to be as popular as the SU7,” Lei wrote on social media.
The YU7 is part of Xiaomi’s broader push into China’s booming electric vehicle market, as the company diversifies beyond smartphones and consumer electronics. The Beijing-based tech giant is positioning itself to compete with established players such as BYD and emerging EV startups by leveraging its technology expertise and brand recognition.
Xiaomi revealed that the YU7, built on the same platform as the SU7, features 90% newly developed components. The new model emphasizes a more comfortable driving style while retaining sporty elements, the company said.
The YU7 will be offered in three versions, including a high-performance Max variant with all-wheel drive and a smart dimming panoramic sunroof. It will also feature exterior voice controls powered by Xiaomi’s AI assistant.
Industry observers view the YU7 as a key test of Xiaomi’s ability to expand its presence in the competitive EV space.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Xiaomi’s proven EV formula drives its growing confidence
When Lei Jun says “we have more confidence” about the YU7, he’s speaking from a position of validated success, not mere optimism.
The SU7 has delivered extraordinary results, exceeding its original sales targets by selling 136,854 units in 2024 alone—more than all EVs made by Ford and GM in China combined 1.
This momentum has continued with the SU7 maintaining over 20,000 deliveries monthly for five consecutive months, totaling more than 180,000 units delivered so far 2.
The SU7’s top ranking in April 2025 sales (28,585 units) demonstrates that Xiaomi has already established credibility in a highly competitive automotive market despite being a newcomer 3.
Lei Jun’s confidence in the YU7 is likely bolstered by having thousands of units already in mass production and ready for delivery when the vehicle launches on June 26 4.
2️⃣ Strategic platform sharing enables rapid portfolio expansion
