Latvian robotics startup Aerones nets $62m in equity funding
Latvian robotics firm Aerones has raised US$62 million in equity funding, led by US-based investors Activate Capital and S2G Investments.
The company aims to expand its robot-based wind turbine maintenance operations globally, deploying AI-enabled solutions in over 30 countries.
Aerones’ robots reduce turbine maintenance time by half, cutting downtime and costs for energy companies.
Aerones plans to raise an additional US$15 million to US$20 million in venture debt later this year.
It recently opened an office in Dallas, Texas, focusing on US growth by hiring and training local staff.
Since 2020, Aerones has generated nearly 400,000 MWh of clean electricity and avoided 165,000 tonnes of carbon emissions.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Wind turbine downtime drives the economics of maintenance innovation
The urgent need for faster wind turbine maintenance stems directly from the massive costs of downtime, explaining why companies like Aerones can attract substantial investment.
A typical wind farm can lose thousands of dollars per hour when turbines aren’t spinning, making maintenance speed a critical economic factor rather than just an operational convenience 1.
The maintenance market itself is projected to reach $36 billion by 2030, representing one of the fastest-growing segments within renewable energy operations 2.
Traditional maintenance methods require technicians to rappel down massive turbine blades, a dangerous, weather-dependent process that can keep turbines offline for days at a time, directly impacting revenue and grid reliability.
By cutting maintenance time in half, as Aerones claims, operators can potentially recover millions in otherwise lost energy production across their fleets, a clear ROI calculation driving adoption of these robotic solutions.
2️⃣ Robotics addresses the wind industry’s persistent maintenance bottlenecks
The wind energy sector has historically struggled with maintenance challenges that have limited scalability despite rapid capacity growth.
