Latin American ecommerce giant Mercado Libre names new CEO
Marcos Galperin, founder and CEO of Mercado Libre, announced his decision to step down as CEO on January 1, 2026.
Ariel Szarfsztejn, currently leading the company’s Marketplace division, will succeed him as CEO.
Galperin, who founded the company in 1999, will take on the role of Executive Chairman, focusing on strategy, product development, company culture, capital allocation, and AI integration.
Szarfsztejn joined Mercado Libre in 2017 and has led key initiatives including logistics across Latin America.
Galperin said the transition was carefully planned to support long-term growth, following major milestones like the Nasdaq IPO and tech expansion.
He added that the company is financially strong and well-positioned for the future amid increasing competition and industry changes.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Well-planned founder transitions correlate with sustained performance
MercadoLibre’s announcement reflects a carefully orchestrated leadership transition, with Galperin planning his move to Executive Chairman over 18 months in advance, contrasting with often abrupt founder departures.
This approach aligns with research showing that smooth leadership transitions significantly enhance long-term productivity, with 90% of successful transitions leading to meeting performance goals 1.
The timing is strategic. Galperin is stepping aside during what he describes as “one of MELI’s best moments” in terms of growth, profitability, and market positioning, similar to how successful tech transitions often occur from positions of strength rather than crisis.
Such deliberate succession planning is particularly crucial given that 62% of C-suite technology executives in Fortune 500 companies are first-time leaders 2, making the learning curve steep without proper preparation.
By maintaining involvement as Executive Chairman focused on strategy and AI implementation, Galperin follows a pattern seen in successful transitions where founding leaders remain engaged in strategic vision while empowering new operational leadership.
2️⃣ Internal succession preserves cultural continuity during leadership changes
Galperin’s selection of Ariel Szarfsztejn, a seven-year company veteran who has led multiple divisions including Marketplace, reflects a deliberate focus on cultural preservation during transition.
