Latin America sees a rise in unicorn tech startups

Latin America has seen a rise in tech startups achieving unicorn status, with billion-dollar valuations across various sectors like fintech, ecommerce, health tech, logistics, and SaaS.

Key ecosystems have emerged in Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Chile, and Uruguay.

Colombian delivery platform Rappi reached a valuation of US$5.25 billion after a funding round in 2021.

Argentina-based neobank Ualá, which offers loans, payments, and investments, reached a valuation of US$2.81 billion after funding rounds in 2025.

Brazilian fintech Creditas was valued at US$4.8 billion after a US$260 million funding round in 2022.

Mexican used-car platform, Kavak, faced valuation challenges due to expansion difficulties.

However, it secured US$127 million in equity and US$400 million in debt facilities in 2025.

These companies continue to grow despite operational challenges.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Latin America’s startup renaissance emerged from earlier boom-bust cycles

The current wave of Latin American unicorns builds upon a foundation laid by earlier tech cycles, with a previous investment surge around 2008-2014 ending in a crash due to economic instability in Brazil and Argentina1.

This historical context helps explain why today’s ecosystem is more resilient, having learned from earlier failures while benefiting from increased smartphone penetration and improved internet infrastructure.

Government initiatives like Start-Up Chile, launched in 2010, provided critical infrastructure by accelerating over 1,600 companies from 85 countries with equity-free funding, creating a model that has been replicated in over 50 countries2.

The region’s tech ecosystem has also benefited from corporate “mafias” like Brazil’s Movile, which has invested in more than 20 startups (including iFood) and created a network where former employees launch new ventures3.

2️⃣ Cross-border expansion remains the biggest challenge for regional unicorns
