KT to invest $11.8b to expand AI business
KT Corp., a South Korean telecoms operator, said in Seoul on July 6 that it plans to invest about 18 trillion won (US$11.8 billion) to expand AI infrastructure and become an AI platform company.
CEO Park Yoon-young said KT will spend 12 trillion won (US$7.8 billion) on cybersecurity, IT, and networks over the next three years.
That includes 4 trillion won (US$2.6 billion) for zero-trust cybersecurity, IT innovation, and network-quality upgrades.
Another 5 trillion won (US$3.25 billion) will fund AI data centers with 1 gigawatt of capacity, while 1 trillion won (US$650 million) will go to additional submarine cables with capacity of more than 90 terabits per second.
KT also said it will start building a token factory and enter stablecoin-related businesses.
The announcement follows calls in 2024 by KT, SK Telecom, and LG Uplus for more government support for AI investment. LG Uplus is also building a US$268 million hyperscale data center.
