Kraken reportedly lays off hundreds ahead of planned IPO

Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken has reportedly laid off hundreds of employees in recent months, according to Coindesk.

The job cuts affect various departments and are part of efforts to streamline operations ahead of a planned initial public offering (IPO).

The layoffs have continued since Arjun Sethi was appointed co-CEO last year. This follows a previous reduction of 15% of Kraken’s workforce.

The company aims to lower costs and improve earnings before interest, taxes, and amortization (EBITA) through these measures.

Kraken has not yet responded to a request for comment.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Crypto exchanges restructuring amid sustained market contraction

Kraken’s layoffs mirror a broader industry trend of exchanges adjusting operations amid declining market conditions.

The overall cryptocurrency market contracted by 18.6% in Q1 2025, falling from $3.8 trillion to $2.8 trillion, putting pressure on exchange revenues and necessitating cost-cutting measures1.

Daily trading volumes across the market have fallen 27.3% (from $200.7 billion to $146 billion), directly impacting exchange earnings which primarily come from transaction fees1.

Centralized exchanges like Kraken have been particularly affected, with total trading volume down 16.3% to $5.4 trillion in the latest quarter1.

This pattern of restructuring has historical precedent in the industry, as Coinbase previously laid off 950 employees in January 2023 during an earlier market downturn2.

2️⃣ IPO timing strategy reflects cautious market navigation

Kraken’s focus on improving EBITDA through layoffs indicates a strategic preparation for public markets that typically reward operational efficiency and profitability metrics.

The company’s IPO preparation comes during a period of significant market volatility, with Bitcoin having dropped from its January 2025 peak of $106,182 to around $78,000 recently – a 28% decline that impacts exchange valuations31.
