Krafton-backed Blue Ocean launches $30m indie game fund
Blue Ocean Games, a Toronto-based investment firm, has launched a US$30 million fund to support early-stage indie game developers.
The fund is backed by Krafton, the South Korean gaming company behind PUBG Studios.
Founded by Damian Lee, former head of investments at Krafton, Blue Ocean Games will offer up to US$300,000 in funding per team, with support focused on solo developers and small teams.
The investment model includes a combination of equity and revenue share, with developers retaining intellectual property rights.
Blue Ocean Games will also provide services such as incorporation assistance, bookkeeping, and mentorship.
Applications for direct funding will open alongside the competition.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ Concept-stage funding addresses a critical gap in indie game development
Blue Ocean Games’ decision to fund developers before they create playable builds represents a significant departure from industry norms.
Most established indie funds like Gamedev Fund require playable demos for consideration, creating a catch-22 where developers need resources to build demos but can’t get resources without demos 1.
This timing mismatch has become more problematic as over 10,000 gaming jobs were lost in 2023, forcing many experienced developers to go indie without the financial cushion to self-fund initial development phases 2.
The $100,000-$300,000 funding range per developer also addresses the reality that many indie developers struggle with basic financial stability, often relying on side jobs or freelance work to support their game development efforts 3.
By removing the playable demo requirement, Blue Ocean eliminates what industry observers call a structural barrier that prevents promising concepts from ever reaching the prototype stage.
2️⃣ Large-scale indie funding reflects industry consolidation trends
The $30 million fund size positions Blue Ocean among the larger players in indie game funding, representing a strategic shift as major publishers create dedicated indie investment arms.
