Korean Air rolls out multilingual AI chatbot for customers

Korean Air has introduced an AI chatbot service on its website and mobile app, supporting 13 languages including Korean, English, Japanese, French, Russian, and German.

The airline said the chatbot is trained on extensive datasets, to analyze customer queries and provide relevant responses in real time.

Korean Air plans to expand the chatbot’s capabilities to include ticket purchases and reservation management in the future.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

Korean Air’s new chatbot is part of a wider AI overhaul

  • This is not the airline’s first automated assistant. A previous chatbot called “KALI” has handled over 500,000 customers each month since 2020 1.
  • The new chatbot also signals a broader plan. Korean Air is building an AI-powered Contact Center (a customer-support operation that handles phone, chat, and other channels) with Amazon Web Services (AWS), a major cloud computing provider. The airline has said it will add machine learning and generative AI by February 2025 after it consolidates its call center platform 2.
  • Korean Air is also taking a “hybrid path” for contact-center upgrades. It is giving human customer-support agents generative AI tools instead of trying to replace support staff with bots 3.
  • This longer digital push follows a 2021 move to shift all IT systems to the cloud, which set the stage for more advanced AI integrations 4.

The airline AI race is moving from chatbots to day-to-day operations

  • Chatbots can help with customer service. Some airlines now gain more by using AI in complex operations. American Airlines uses AI to manage disruption by rebooking passengers and making aircraft hold decisions to cut missed connections 3.
  • Lufthansa uses an AI system to improve aircraft turnaround times (the time it takes to unload, clean, refuel, and reload a plane between flights). That can improve punctuality and lower operating costs 3.
  • Airlines can also stumble when they cut people out of support. Frontier Airlines removed its telephony support option, so customers can reach human agents only through online chat 2.
  • Progress now leans on technical building blocks like “agent orchestrators” (software that routes tasks between different AI models and business systems). These tools steer work across models and specialized systems, which goes beyond basic Q&A bots 5.
