Korea Eximbank backs LG Electronics AI projects with $200m

The Export-Import Bank of Korea will provide 300 billion won (US$200 million) in financing to support LG Electronics’ AI work, including an overseas export project for AI data center cooling solutions.

The funding will be offered through the bank’s preferential AX program, which it newly introduced to back AI-led business shifts.

The bank will also finance small and midsized suppliers joining LG’s overseas projects, and suppliers tied to LG’s Changwon plant may qualify for interest rates as low as 1.2%.

LG will provide consulting and technical staff to help Changwon area partners build smart factories, while Eximbank plans broader financing under its AX program.

🧠 Food for thought

Implications, context, and why it matters.

The 300 billion won loan sits within a national AI industry push

  • The loan comes from the Export-Import Bank of Korea’s “AX Special Program,” a five-year plan worth 22 trillion won aimed at speeding the country’s AI transformation 1.
  • The program goes beyond LG and covers the AI supply chain, from High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) and data center infrastructure to AI model development and robotics 1.
  • Funding includes 20 trillion won in loans and guarantees plus 2 trillion won in direct and indirect investment for early-stage AI startups, including teams building AI chips, models, and solutions 1.

State funding backs LG’s effort to cover AI data centers from hardware to operations

  • The financing supports LG’s “One LG” strategy, which pulls together affiliate strengths including cooling hardware from LG Electronics, power infrastructure such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS) and energy storage systems (ESS) from LG Energy Solution, plus data center design, construction, and operations from LG CNS and LG Uplus 2.
  • LG Electronics has also lined up deals to supply cooling solutions for AI data center projects including one planned in Oxagon, NEOM City, Saudi Arabia, and it won a contract to provide cooling for a hyperscale data center under construction in North America 3.
  • The AX program is one of several state financing efforts, and the Export-Import Bank of Korea has also said it will provide 28 trillion won in policy financing over five years to support the “K-culture” industry as a new export engine 4.
