KKR buys South Korea cosmetics packaging firm Samhwa for $528m

KKR has acquired South Korean cosmetics packaging company Samhwa for 733 billion won (US$528 million) from TPG.

Samhwa, founded in 1977, supplies packaging to over 300 cosmetic brands including L’Oréal, Estée Lauder, Chanel, and LVM.

TPG has been an investor in Samhwa since 2023.

KKR has previously invested in several Korean firms such as Musinsa, SK E&S, and Ecorbit.

The deal comes as South Korea’s cosmetics industry ranks among the world’s top cosmetics exporters.

🧠 Food for thought

1️⃣ Private equity can rapidly unlock value in specialized B2B companies through operational focus

TPG’s transformation of Samhwa demonstrates how private equity firms can create substantial returns in niche industrial markets through targeted improvements.

TPG acquired Samhwa for approximately 300 billion won in 2023 and sold it to KKR for 800 billion won just 20 months later, nearly tripling their investment1.

This rapid value creation occurred through strategic management changes and focusing the company on higher-margin products, transforming what was a family-owned business into a leading supplier for over 300 global cosmetic brands including L’Oréal, Estée Lauder, and Chanel2.

The success reflects how specialized manufacturing companies with strong customer relationships can benefit significantly from professional management and strategic repositioning, even in relatively short timeframes.

2️⃣ KKR’s systematic approach to South Korean investments builds sector expertise over time

KKR’s acquisition of Samhwa represents the latest step in a methodical eight-year investment strategy across multiple South Korean sectors.

The firm previously acquired LS Group’s automotive assets for $943 million in 2017, followed by a $1.9 billion Seoul real estate project in 2018, demonstrating consistent capital deployment in the market34.

This pattern shows how global private equity firms can build deep local market knowledge and relationships over time, allowing them to identify opportunities like Samhwa that benefit from both sector trends, such as the growing global cosmetics packaging market projected to reach $39.05 billion by 2030, and Korea’s specific strengths in beauty product innovation5.
