Kia, Kakao Mobility partner on self-driving vehicles

Kia said it signed an agreement in Seoul with South Korea-based mobility platform Kakao Mobility on July 16 to develop purpose-built vehicles (PBVs) for autonomous driving services.

The partnership combines Kia’s PBV development capabilities with Kakao Mobility’s autonomous driving technology.

Kia will supply its PV5 model with a dev kit for Kakao Mobility’s autonomous driving pilot project this year.

The companies said the pilot project’s results and business plans would guide later supplies of mass-produced PBVs and the development of PBVs tailored for commercial autonomous driving services.

They also plan to jointly develop and test technologies to support commercial driverless services, including remote operation and wireless charging.
