Kia cuts 2030 EV sales target to 1.26 million units
Kia Corporation, a South Korean automaker, announced on Apr. 9 that it has revised its 2030 electric vehicle (EV) sales target to 1.26 million units.
This is a decrease from the previous goal of 1.6 million units set last year.
The company also plans to sell 993,000 hybrid vehicles by 2030.
Kia cited uncertainty in US automotive policy as a reason for the revised goals.

🧠 Food for thought
1️⃣ EV growth remains strong despite scaled-back targets reflecting market reality
Kia’s downward revision of its 2030 EV target comes despite the company achieving record EV growth, with first-half 2024 electric sales up 112% year-over-year to 29,392 units 1.
This pattern of strong near-term growth paired with reduced long-term forecasts reflects the broader industry’s recalibration around EV adoption timelines, as EVs still represent just 7% of Kia’s overall U.S. sales despite the impressive percentage increases 2.
The adjustment shows Kia balancing optimism from their current electric momentum, including three consecutive months of 5,000+ EV sales in early 2024, with pragmatic expectations about the pace of market transition 1.
The company continues expanding its electric portfolio with strong performers like the EV9 (22,017 units sold in 2024) while maintaining focus on its combustion models like the Sportage (587,717 global units), demonstrating a dual-track approach to navigating the transition period 23.
2️⃣ Hybrids gain strategic importance as bridge technology
Kia’s new target of 993,000 hybrid sales by 2030 signals a strategic shift toward a more balanced electrification approach rather than an all-in BEV strategy.
The company’s hybrid sales grew 49% year-over-year in October 2024, outpacing the overall market and demonstrating strong consumer demand for this transitional technology 4.
This hybrid focus aligns with broader industry trends where many automakers are strengthening their hybrid portfolios as consumers seek electrification benefits without the range anxiety or charging infrastructure limitations that still affect pure EVs.
Kia’s SUV-heavy lineup (73% of October 2024 sales) particularly benefits from hybrid options that address the efficiency challenges of larger vehicles while meeting consumer preferences for utility and space 4.
