Kia becomes first to hit 100,000 UK EV sales
Kia UK said it is the first automaker in the UK market to pass 100,000 EV sales, with cumulative EV sales reaching 104,794 units as of the first of this month after launching the Soul EV there in 2014.
The South Korea carmaker sold 20,136 vehicles of all types in the UK in Q1, giving it a 5.29% market share and second place behind Volkswagen, at 7.19%.
Kia’s UK EV sales rose from under 1,000 units a year between 2014 and 2019 to 17,345 units in 2023, before slipping to 15,479 in 2024 due to slower EV demand.
UK cumulative EV sales rose 14.5% year-on-year to 137,614 units in Q1, and Kia plans to introduce the EV2 in the second half of this year and the PV7 next year.

🧠 Food for thought
Implications, context, and why it matters.
Kia’s UK electric car sales mix is outperforming the market
- Kia UK’s 2024 EV sales fell, yet EVs make up a bigger share of its UK sales than the national average.
- In March, EVs accounted for 25% of Kia’s UK retail sales, eight points above the overall UK market average of 17% 1.
- This UK performance differs from Kia’s global plan, where it cut its 2030 EV sales forecast by 340,000 units 2.
- Worldwide, Kia is leaning harder into hybrids and aims to almost double hybrid sales to nearly 1 million units by 2030 2.
Government grants are reshaping the UK’s EV battlefield
- Kia’s UK momentum now runs into the Electric Car Grant, a government subsidy for EV buyers that rewards sustainable production and often favors European-built cars 3.
- Three Kia models qualify for the lower-tier 1,500 pounds (US$2,000) discount, while rivals such as Ford qualify for the top 3,750 pounds (US$5,000) grant 3.
- The split has kicked off a price fight, with excluded brands such as Hyundai, Volvo, and MG rolling out discounts that mirror the official grants 4.
- Lower sticker prices reduce a common hurdle for adoption and push carmakers to compete on total cost of ownership, including running and financing costs, rather than performance alone 5.
